Last November of 2013 the 4th Stakeholders Meeting for the Flood Risk Management Project for Cagayan de Oro River (FRIMP-CDOR) was held at N Hotel and among the highlights was the result of the preparatory survey conducted for the project.

The survey covered the city’s riverside barangays from Balulang in the south to Bonbon and Macabalan in the north. A map of a section of the project is shown below with the city proper near city hall and the area just south of it including Paseo del Rio, Macanhan in Carmen and Tambo in Macasandig. You will see the ongoing dike project being undertaken by DPWH in BLUE LINES and the proposed Mega Dike to be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in YELLOW LINES. You may notice the GREEN and RED colored area in the map. RED is actually the NO BUILD ZONE (NBZ) and the river area is GREEN.

They already started the construction, I think. The beautiful river in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines will be gone if the proposed Dam will push through. Proponents of this project are secretly lobbying to push with the construction of the Dam without letting the public know especially the people on the downstream side which will be greatly affected. Imagine with this Mega Dike, 15 Barangays are affected and thousands of people as well.

Tourism of Cagayan de Oro will surely go down and the pride White Water Rafting of Cagayan de Oro business will surely down. But seriously. THAT SUCKS. I dont see how the city could let that happen because it will affect so many businesses there directly & indirectly as the river is a major drawcard for tourists to the city???
